Oeroezgan / Uruzgan is een provincie in de Islamitische
Republiek Afghanistan in Centraal-Azië, gelegen in de zuidwestelijke uitlopers van het Hindoe Koesj-gebergte.
In deze Afghaanse provincie zijn 1200 Nederlandse militairen gestationeerd in het
kader van de NAVO-vredesmissie.
De provincie bestaat uit 9 districten [ woluswali ] : Chora, Dihrawud, Gizab, Khas Uruzgan, Kijran, Nesh, Shahidi Hassas, Shahristan en Tarin Kowt.
Driekwart van de bevoling woont in de groene rivierdalen.
Uruzgan bevindt zich in het midden van het land en wordt hoofdzakelijk bewoond door leden van de stammen: de Popolzai, de
Achekzai, de Kakal en de Noorzai.
Mullah Omar, de verdwenen leider van de Taliban, is in deze provincie geboren.
De hoofdstad van Oeroezgan is Tarin Kowt.

Klein en stoffig stadje met zo'n 7,000 inwoners. De stad beschikt over een bazar met nog geen 200 kleine winkeltjes. De gouverneur woont in een compound tegenover de bazar.
Tarin Kowt ligt wat geisoleerd met in de buurt een militaire basis geleid door het NATO Provincial Reconstruction Team.
Over de weg is Tarin Knowt te bereiken middels een slechte en onveilige weg naar Kandahar in de aangrenzende provincie [ zuidelijk ].
De stad is een van de weinige plaatsen in de provincie waar enige mate van centraal gezag geldt.

De Afghaanse keuken is eenvoudig, maar rijk aan invloeden uit Oezbekistan, China en vooral Iran. Gerechten
met noedels en pasta zijn vooral in het noorden van het land geliefd, en lijken erg op de noedels die in Centraal Azië en China worden gegeten.
