The oldest historical record regarding Dalkeith is contained in a grant of lands of Balnetuth (Dalkeith) by Peter de Graham described as `Lord of Dalkeith', in favour of the monks of the Cistercian Order. This was in the reign of William the Lion. Peter de Graham's son, Sir Henry de Graham confirmed this grant at some date between 1153 and 1159......

Gladstone's Land is a typical example of a 17th-century tenement building of the overcrowded Old Town which grew up along the ridge between Edinburgh Castle and the Palace of Holyroodhouse – the Royal Mile.  National Galleries of Scotland
Their magnificent collections of art encompass the 14th century up to the present day and they have preserved and displayed Scotland's national collection of art since 1859. The National Galleries of Scotland are five Edinburgh-based galleries and two outstations, one in the north and one in the south of Scotland
 Pentland Hills
The Pentland Hills are a quaint collection of small hills just to the South of Edinburgh, they are an easy relaxed walk and you can cover a large part of them in a day. These hills are a good place to come for a good view of the surrounding area as on a clear day you can take in a good view of Edinburgh, the Forth and its bridges and the Southern Coast of Fife.
 Roman Fort, Cramond 
Cramond's origins date back nearly two thousand years. When the Romans invaded Scotland for the second time, in AD139, they stopped at a line between the Forth and the Clyde and built the Antonine Wall. In about AD142 they built a fort at Cramond to protect the southern shore of the Forth, east of the end of the wall, and to act as a supply port for the Roman Army in Scotland. The foundations of the Roman Fort were partly covered by the chapel first built in Cramond in the 600s.

The Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh was founded in the 17th century as a 'Physic Garden', growing medicinal plants. This first Garden was in St Anne's Yard, part of the Holyrood Palace grounds, and occupied an area the size of a tennis court. It now extends to four sites – Edinburgh, Benmore (near Dunoon in Argyll), Logan (near Stranraer in Galloway), and Dawyck (near Peebles in the Borders), and is the second richest collection of plant species in the world.

Since the monument for writer Sir Walter Scott opened in August 1846, millions of people have climbed the 200 foot structure to admire its commanding views of the city centre, and to obtain a closer look at the statuettes of characters from Scott's works.

At the foot of Edinburgh's historic Royal Mile, the site at Holyrood was chosen in 1998 as the permanent home for the Scottish Parliament. In July of the same year Enric Miralles in partnership with RMJM Scotland Limited were appointed to design the new Parliament building.

The Port and Shore of Leith are only 2 miles from the centre of Edinburgh. The maritime gateway to the capital city, Leith and its adjacent waterfront areas have played a significant role in Scotland's history. Leith has received visiting seafaring monarchs and VIPs from the early Middle Ages to modern times; has imported wine and exported whisky for hundreds of years, and became an important shipbuilding and industrial centre in the 20th century.
