Azoren liggen 1300 tot 1800 km van de Canarische Eilanden en 900 km vanaf Madeira. Behalve in Funchal, de
hoofdstad van Madeira, is er geen wijk met hotels. Funchal zelf is met ongeveer 100.000 inwoners de enige grote stad op de eilanden.

Sao Miguel - hoofdeiland van de Azoren
Corvo Island [ Westelijke eilandengroep ]
The north west is Monte Gordo, the peak of a huge marine volcano. The main attraction of the island is a green crater lake dotted with nine islets. The only centre of population is one small village.
Flores - vormt samen met Ilha do Corvo de Santa Cruz groep
The Ilha das Flores is Europe's westernmost point. From here one can see the Ilha do Corvo and, so the
legend goes, America. A small island with a rich flora. Huge hortensia hedges criss-cross the island.
Promenading through the island feels like rediscovering nature. It has numerous crater lakes that offer good fishing and is noted for its lush flora (whence its name).
Faial [ Centrale eilandengroep ]
The capital, Horta, is a regular meeting point for yachts crossing the Atlantic. In the centre of the island is a
volcanic crater, about 1 mile in diameter, which has the luxuriant vegetation that used to cover the islands.
Pico
Horta Airport is located only 10 km away from city downtown. Passengers landing at or taking-off from Horta
airport are delighted at the view: a immense green of the grass and the blue of the hortensia, cutting through the landscape in perfect harmony, while reaching the esplendor of Pico's mountain.
Sao Jorge [ Centrale eilandengroep ]
The island is famous for its cheese and other dairy products and has many 17th century paintings.
Its micro climate enables many tropical fruit and dragon trees to flourish.
Graciosa - ca. 45 km ten noordwesten van Terceira
IThe Island of Gracioca has a surface area of 61 km2 and is the least humid island of the archipelago. It was
given the nickname of the white island due to the delicate landscape and the names given to certain places
including 'Pedras Brancas' or White Stones, 'Serra Branca' or White Mountainside, and 'Barro Branco' or White Clay.
Terceira [ Centrale eilandengroep ]
Angra do Heroísmo is the capital and the main port of the island. It had major strategic significance during the period of the great Portuguese maritime discoveries.
In 1983 the central area of the city was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site. A geological reserve in the centre of the island has underground grottoes and lakes.

Located near the City of Ponta Delgada, the most populous urban center on S. Miguel Island, in the Azores
Archipelago, the João Paulo II Airport - a modern, forward-looking infrastructure - is one of the main gateways to the Azores Autonomous Region
Santa Maria [ Oostelijke eilandengroep ]
Santa Maria Island is the easternmost island of the Azores Archipelago. This island was the first to be discovered by Portuguese explorers in 1427.
It has many coves and sandy beaches, a spectacular landscape and temperate year round climate.
Volcanic activity has left furnas, deep chasms and tunnels, some of which can be visited with a guide.
Big game fishing is available near the coast.
