The Saba National Park, a 43 ha pie-shaped tract of land on the north coast of Saba, and formerly owned by the Sulphur Mining Company offers important biological, geological and historical values. It encompasses all vegetation zones present on Saba, an abandoned sulfur mine, hot springs, and it is an important nesting area for Red-billed tropicbirds and several other species of seabirds. Saba is een romantisch eiland dat rechtop uit de zee rijst tot een hoogte van 900m en geen baaien of stranden bezit. De rijke tropische pracht van orchideeën, varens en palmen is verrassend. De enige weg op het eiland kronkelt langs diepe afgronden, maar voert ook door prachtig glooiende valleien.

Op donderdag 11 oktober 1492 werd vanaf het schip van de Spaanse ontdekkingsreiziger Columbus land ontdekt. Later bleek dat het ging om een deel van de wereld dat in Europa nog totaal onbekend was: Amerika. Het was het begin van een eeuwenlange geschiedenis van moord, plundering, verwoesting, oorlog, kolonisatie en slavernij in dat 'nieuwe' werelddeel. Veel West-Europese landen hebben zich aan verschrikkingen schuldig gemaakt. Ook Nederland.
In de 17de eeuw veroverden Holland en Zeeland onder meer zes eilanden in het Caribisch gebied, die lang de Nederlandse Antillen zijn genoemd: Aruba, Bonaire, Curaçao, Saba, Sint Eustatius en Sint Maarten. Tegenwoordig zijn deze eilanden in grote mate zelfstandig. Maar nog altijd behoren ze tot het Koninkrijk der Nederlanden. Dat betekent dat deze eilandbewoners óók Nederlanders zijn.

Ligt in de Cove-Baai. Dagelijks vluchten naar St. Eustatius, St. Kitts en driemaal daags naar St. Maarten.
Het heeft de kortste landingsbaan voor commercieel vliegverkeer ter wereld (400 meter).

Cuisine - Saba Recepten

Most local foods revolve around "stobás" (stews) and are generally served with rice or funchi, a sort of cornmeal dish similar to Italian polenta.

Kabritu Stobá [ White rice or rice with black beans ], Bakiow Stobá, Yambo Stobá [ Antillean gumbo made with plenty of okra. Its appearance is very "lebe lebe" (slimy) ], Karko Stobá [ this dish is prepared with conch and should be familiar to Floridians and seasoned Island hoppers. White rice and fried plantains are the favored accompaniments ], Galiña stobá [ Chicken stew ], Baka Stobá [ this familiar dish, beef stew, is an international favorite with an Antillian twist ].

 From Hearth to Home  -  Saba's Cookbook
A very original cookbook compiled by the Saba Lace Ladies Group is just off the press and now available at various gift shops on the island. The 272-page book is entitled "From Hearth to Home" and contains 308 recipes, 15 articles about the island, and illustrations of Saban stone hearths by local artists.

Geschiedenis van Saba

Receiving more than 100 cm of annual rainfall, Arawak and Carib Indians were lured to Saba as a source for fresh water and rich volcanic soil.

In 1635 leed een Engels schip schipbreuk bij Saba; de overlevenden waren m.e.a.z.g.w. de eerste Europese bewoners. De verdere bevolking stamt af van Afrikaanse slaven, Schotten, Ieren en Zeeuwen.

The island was first colonized in 1640 by the Dutch. Through the 17th and 18th centuries its major industries were sugar and rum, and later fishing. In 1818 the Dutch took possession of Saba.

 Harry L. Johnson Museum, Windwardside
Saba's Harry Luke Johnson museum is located in a 160-year old Saban sea captain's cottage in Windwardside. It stands in the middle of a beautiful meadow, used as a public park for picnics and Sunday croquet games. There is a playground for small children.
The museum interior has retained the furnishings of the Victorian era. There is a small resource center with articles and articles on Saba and a collection of artifacts from the Amerindian archeological sites around the island. Curator Sherrie Peterson will welcome you and explain the exhibits.
