Staatsparken in Colorado  -  Colorado State Parks
Colorado's 40 State Parks are a vital cornerstone in Colorado's economy and quality of life, offering some of the highest quality outdoor recreation destinations in the state. Colorado State Parks manages over 215,000 land and water acres. Colorado State Parks offers a variety of landscape to match the state's geography, from urban playgrounds to backcountry retreats, from mountain lakes to whitewater adventure.

 Nationaal Park Rocky Mountain
You'll feel it nowhere stronger than in Rocky Mountain National Park, a 400-square-mile preserve of forests, meadows, tundra, and opaline ponds. You can stay above timberline for days on end, enjoying views normally reserved for the sharp eyes of an eagle; picnic by a creek as it shambles side to side across a meadow; or tug at a pulsating line with a native greenback cutthroat at the other end. Here and elsewhere in the region--at Red Feather Lakes, deep in granite-walled Poudre Canyon, high along the Peak-to-Peak Highway--light, color, and shape achieve a kind of perfection.

 Colorado Piedmont
 Denver-Aurora Metropolitan Area
 Eastern Plains
 Front Range
The mountain towns of North Central respectfully defer to nature. Estes Park serves as the national park's ornate lobby, Grand Lake its breezy back porch. Idaho Springs, Georgetown, and other lofty hamlets tuck themselves as inconspiciously as possible between ridges. Only in the gambling meccas of Central City and Black Hawk do man-made attractions presume to supersede this breathtaking wilderness, but at least they do it with some flair - and besides, jackpot-spouting slot machines are beautiful in their own way.
Boulder, home of the University of Colorado, nicely captures the essence of the region. Framed by foothills, the city boasts 33,000 acres of parks and trails, as well as a philosophy of spiritual and environmental health. There's plenty to do and see in town, including the always-lively Pearl Street Mall and the summer-long Colorado Music Festival. Additional dining and entertainment can be found in Fort Collins, the site of Colorado State University, and Greeley, home of the University of Northern Colorado.
 Grand Valley
 Mineral Belt
 Northeast Colorado  -  Sterling
Northeastern Colorado often catches visitors by surprise. Rather than the mountains and forests for which the state is famous, this region holds wide-open grasslands and seas of golden wheat--a land of infinite flats . Locals call it "Colorado's Outback" or "The Other Colorado" in proud celebration of their area's pioneer traditions and expansive natural beauty.
While throngs of gold-seekers paraded to and from Colorado's hills, homesteaders quietly moved onto these prairies and built communities as level-steady as the horizon. The roots are still visible today; old emigrant trails, antique buildings, and abandoned settlements (some brought back to life, others rotting) pepper the landscape. The Pony Express passed through, as did Kit Carson and Buffalo Bill. Residents love to celebrate and share their area's history. Nearly every summer weekend contains a gunfight reenactment, draft-horse pull, mountain man rendezvous, antique carriage parade, or heritage festival. Rodeos, pancake breakfasts, and threshing-machine demonstrations are nearly as prominent.
 Noordwest  -  Grand Junction
Colorado's Northwest sector is truly a study in contrasts. This land of green mountains and bone-dry desert, glitzy resorts and gritty sagebrush towns, ultramodern petroleum plants and century-old ranches represents nearly everything that Colorado is or ever has been.
I-70 cruises through the modern heart of Colorado, linking the world-class resort playgrounds of Summit County and the Vail Valley with the oil-shale boomtowns further west. Along U.S. 40, an older but still vital side of the Centennial State survives. Here, ranchers and cowboys follow patterns that have remained unchanged since the 19th century, trailing herds in scenes almost as old as the West. By the time you approach the Utah line, you may think you have traveled through a time warp; this weirdly beautiful moonscape coughs up dinosaur skeletons hundreds of millions of years old.
Pikes Peak & Colorado Springs  -  Ute Pass Vacation Guide
Lodging, Dining, Shopping, Activities and Attractions for the towns of historic Ute Pass — The Original Gateway to Western Colorado!
 Roaring Fork Valley
 San Luis Valley
 South Central  -  Colorado Springs
South Central Colorado offers up a smorgasbord of pointed peaks, deep canyons, and dazzling wildflowers. Sunlight streams down warm and pure, draping aspens in gold and throwing sharp shadows across the mountainscape. Thunderheads twice the size of a 14er unleash furious lightning-and-hail assaults.
Against these towering, formidable backdrops, hardy towns nestle in wooded valleys. Leadville, the highest city in America, is so far up it seems to rest on a cloud. The Collegiate Peaks cluster around Buena Vista, and the Sangre de Cristos soar over the sweeping Great Sand Dunes. Colorado Springs offers a touch of urban class beneath the eminent heights of Pikes Peak.
In the San Luis Valley the land lies flat, as if to rest from the rolls and headstands it performs elsewhere. Here farmers raise crops in the rich soil, and glistening streams snake through marshy meadows. At Royal Gorge the earth slips even lower, nosediving a thousand feet to the Arkansas River. Rafters, kayakers, and fishermen ply their skills here and on dozens of other pristine lakes and streams.
 Southeast Colorado  -  Pueblo
Although history books usually begin with the 19th-century gold rush to the central Rockies, the real cradle of Colorado is here, on the wind-swept plains of the Southeast. It was here, in the 1540s, that the first gold -seekers arrived--Francisco Vasquez de Coronado and his band of conquistadores. It was here, in 1806, that Colorado received its first emissaries from the United States--the expedition led by Zebulon Pike. And it was here, in 1833, that the first American settlement was raised--Bent's Old Fort. The fact is, almost everything that has happened in Colorado happened here first.
The Arkansas River represents a direct line into the past. The Santa Fe Trail ran right alongside it, bringing traders and, later, armies into one of the country's last Native American strongholds. For legendary frontiersmen such as Kit Carson and John C. Fremont, the Arkansas provided a gateway to the Rockies. Homesteaders traveled upstream in their wake, moving in tandem with the railroad crews and building towns- -Lamar, La Junta, Rocky Ford--that still dot the banks of the river. The two largest cities of Southeast Colorado, Trinidad and Pueblo, made their wealth on ranching, coal mining, and commerce.
 Southwest Colorado  -  Durango
The area's beauty amazes, transfixing the eye in an endless metamorphosis of colors and shapes. Blue crags jut between grassy meadows and plunge down to roiling white rapids. Brush-stubbled mesas yawn open, creating impossibly deep stone canyons. Hot springs bubble up from sources unseen, steam flaring. Just after sunset, distant ridges turns soft and gray, silhouetted against purple-pink skies.
The human landscape is as dramatic as the topography; not even lifelong residents have unraveled all of the region's mysteries. Ghost towns and abandoned mines litter the San Juan Mountains, while on the high flats of the Colorado Plateau, nameless ruins bear witness to an ancient civilization. Mesa Verde National Park, Hovenweep National Monument, and the Anasazi Heritage Center make this area an archaeologist's dream.
The towns of the Southwest march to their own rhythm. People are always on the move-biking, hiking, running, climbing, flying, boating, even occasionally working-yet nobody is in a hurry. Telluride, Silverton, and Ouray-the divine trinity of the San Juans-pair stunning physical beauty with high culture, making them attractive retreats for starving artists and CEOs alike. Down the hill, Durango offers Western congeniality, with just a hint of rebellious frontier spirit. And funky, friendly Crested Butte embodies the individualist ethic of the West. Spend a few days in these upbeat locales and you'll be convinced that anything is possible.

In the vast American West there is a tough, high, lonely land called the Colorado plateau. Lying mostly in Utah, it extends south into Arizona and east into Colorado. This stark and untamed wilderness is home to an incredible array of creatures, including the grasshopper mouse, burrowing owl, rattlesnake and the resourceful coyote.
 Pikes Peak Cog Railway
Highest rack railway in the world as well as the highest railway in North America.
Conventional railroads use the friction of wheels upon the rails, called "adhesion", to provide locomotive power. A cog, or rack, railroad uses a gear, "cog wheel", meshing into a special rack rail (mounted in the middle between the outer rails) to climb much steeper grades than those possible with a standard adhesion railroad.
The Manitou & Pikes Peak Railway uses the Abt rack system. The maximum grades are 25%, which is about the upper limit for the Abt system.
