Het Lake District / Merengebied is een nationaal park in het graafschap Cumbria in het noordwesten van Engeland.

Het is een bergachtige streek en telt 16 meren, waarvan de bekendste Windermere, Coniston Water, Ullswater, Thirlmere, Derwent Water en Bassenthwaite Lake zijn. Bekende heuvels zijn Coniston Old Man, Scafell, Scafell Pike, Skiddaw, Great Gable, en Helvellyn.

Toeristische centra zijn vooral de plaatsen Keswick en Ambleside.

Located on the lake shore of Derwentwater near to the Lakeland market town of Keswick, the launch company offers Lake District cruises around Derwentwater throughout the year.

Small steam engines haul trains through two of Lakelands loveliest valleys to the foot of Englands highest mountain.
 South Tynedale Railway  -  Treinen rijden tussen Alston en Kirkhaugh
The South Tynedale Railway operates narrow gauge passenger trains along a 2¼ mile line along the scenic South Tyne valley between Alston, in Cumbria and Kirkhaugh, in Northumberland. Train services operate on certain dates between Easter and October and "Santa Special" trains on certain dates in December each year.

 Cockermouth
Cockermouth in het District Allerdale heeft zijn bestaan aan het rivierensysteem te danken. Het nabijgelegen Romeinse kamp van Dervenitio lag aan het noordelijke einde van doorwaadbare plaats in de rivier Derwent, die iets ten noorden van de huidige stad het oosten naar het westen stroomt. Hier was een belangrijk wegverbindingspunt t.b.v. mogelijke backups voor de Muur van Hadrian.
Echt bekend is Cckermouth vanwege het feit dat William Wordsworth hier geboren is en er de eerste jaren van zijn leven doorbracht op de school in Kirkgate [ nu de Church Hall ].
Maar Wordsworth is niet de enige bekende persoon uit deze omgeving. Zowel Fletcher Christian, de muiter van de Bounty, en John Dalton van de atoomtheorie kwamen uit dorpjes niet ver van Cockermouth.

Keswick is zo'n beetje uitgegroeid tot het belangrijkste toeristische centrum van de noordelijke meren. Dit  gezellige marktstadje biedt een gevarieerd aanbod aan attrakties, van winkeltjes en restaurants to museums.

De stad bestond al voor 1100 en ligt op de Solwayvlakte tussen Caldbeck Fells en de kust van Solway. Wigton is een centrum voor winkels, pubs en restaurants, theater, bowls, zwemmen, tennis en sport. het kan dienen als beginpunt of basis voor wandel- en fietstrips in the Solway Plain en Caldbeck fells van Cumbria.

Dove Cottage was the home of William Wordsworth from December 1799 to May 1808, the years of his supreme work as a poet. It was built, probably in the early part of the 17th century, as a small hostelry. With its oak-panelled hall and floors of Westmorland slate, Dove Cottage never fails to give pleasure to the visitor.

 Loweswater  -  Meer van Loweswater
Nestled in a wooded valley in the far west of the Lake District, in the Vale of Lorton, Loweswater is a peaceful lake that is often bypassed. At approximately 1 mile in length, 1/2 mile wide and 60 feet deep, it provides an excellent lake circuit for walkers.
Loweswater is unique within the Lake District, as it is the only lake that drains towards the center of Lakeland - to Crummock Water which it was once joined to. Red squirrels, whose favourite habitat is coniferous, can be found in the locality. The lake is owned by the National Trust.

 Vale of Lorton
The Vale of Lorton is a sequence of valleys leading from Cockermouth towards Keswick. In one of the lushest, prettiest parts of the Northern Lakes, the valley contains the lakes Loweswater, Crummock Water and Buttermere. At the end of the valley you can get to Keswick via Honister Pass and Borrowdale.
There are many excellent walks in this area, including to the waterfall at Scale Force.

In Cumbria zijn restanten te vinden van de Muur van Hadrianus. Deze grote Romeinse muur werd door keizer Hadrianus aangelegd om de Romeinen te beschermen tegen invallen vanuit het noorden.
