In Santiago de Compostela liggen volgend de traditie de stoffelijke resten begraven van Jakobus de Meerdere, de apostel die het christendom naar het Westen bracht.
De stad is een zeer bedevaartsoort waarnaar toe vele wegen leiden. Over deze historische pelgrimswegen
zijn ontelbaar veel publicatie verschenen. Daarin wordt aan de persoon en het leven van de apostel echter
weinig aandacht besteed. Mireille Madou schreef daarom een boek waarin voor het eerst de apostel zelf
centraal staat. Ze beschrijft het beeld dat in de loop van de eeuwen van de apostel is gevormd op basis van
geschreven bronnen en mondelinge tradities, en stelde een Jakobus-iconografie samen: een keuze van een
representatief aantal types uit de talloze verbeeldingen van de heilige. Daarmee laat ze zien hoe Santiago vanaf de elfde eeuw tot heden is verbeeld.

Santiago de Compostela is mainly a monumental town, a stony miracle which has been shaped around the
Apostle St James's sepulchre along the centuries, and which has resulted in one of the most splendid and
harmonic architectural ensembles in the world. Considered to be one of the three spiritual capitals of Christendom together with Rome and Jerusalem, from the Middle Ages it became the goal of religious
pilgrimages, a phenomenon that would give birth to the pilgrims' Road to Santiago, the real spine of the art and
the thought from which, as Goethe said, the idea of Europe would be born. Thanks to this road, Compostela
spread its creations all over Europe in the same way that all cultural trends found their reflection in the city.

At the beginning of the ninth century, the bishop of Iria, Teodomiro, discovered the tomb of the apostle St
James and Kings Alfonso II and Alfonso III erected churches and founded the monasteries of Antealtares and
Pinario. The cult of Santiago, however, had aroused the distrust of the Muslim vizier, Almanzor, who razed Compostela to the ground in 997 and took the bells off to Cordoba.

Betanzos
The village of Betanzos, 23 kilometres from La Coruña, contains wonderful examples of medieval architecture
, with the many houses bearing coats of arms and its 'fishing quarter' making it a delightful place to visit. Once a flourishing port, it now lies some distance from the sea.

Ourense is a city with centuries of history. It was an important settlement during Roman times because of its

The name Galicia comes from Latin name Gallaecia, associated to the name of the ancient Celtic tribe that
resided above the Douro river, the Gallaeci or Callaeci in Latin and Kallaikoi in Greek (these tribes were mentioned by Herodotus).
Before the Roman invasion, a series of tribes lived on the region, having — according to Strabo, Pliny,
Herodotus and others — a similar culture and customs. These tribes appear to have Celtic culture; there is evidence that the last Galician Celtic speaker died in the 15th century.
The region was first entered by the Roman legions under Decimus Junius Brutus in 137–136 BC....
