Puerto Rico of Porto Rico is een met de Verenigde Staten geassocieerde vrijstaat in het oostelijk deel van de Caribische Zee. Het maakt deel uit van de Grote Antillen, en ligt in het noordoostelijke deel van de Cariben, oostelijk van de Dominicaanse Republiek, en ten westen van de Maagdeneilanden.

De Caribische Zee vormt de oostkust en de Stille Oceaan de westkust. De kortste afstand tussen de twee kusten bedraagt slechts 120 km. De hoogste berg in Costa Rica, de Chirripo van ruim 3800 m, ligt precies in het smalste deel. Met een oppervlakte van 51.000 km, is Costa Rica slechts 1,3 maal groter dan Nederland.

Puerto Rico, het kleinste van de Grote Antillen bestaat uit het hoofdeiland Puerto Rico en een aantal kleiner eilanden en keys, die Mona, Vieques en Culebra omvatten. Aleen Culebra en Vieques zijn daarvan bewoond.

San Juan National Historic Site, includes forts, bastions, powder houses, wall and El Cañuelo Fort, also called San Juan de la Cruz–defensive fortifications that once surrounded the old, colonial portion of San Juan, Puerto Rico. El Cañuelo Fort is located at Isla de Cabras at the western end of the entrance to San Juan Bay. Sections of the massive sandstone walls, dating to the 1630s, remain; so, too, do the San Cristóbal and San Felipe del Morro forts.

Ligt in het noordoostelijke deel van het eiland. San Juan werd in 1521 door Spaanse kolonisten gesticht en wordt algemeen gezien als de oudstae stad in de VS.
Old San Juan is met zijn vele musea een populaire bestemming voor de liefhebbers van kunst en cultuur. De belangrijkste trekpleister hierbij is het uit 1520 daterende 'Institute of Puerto Rican Culture'.

Settled by the Spanish around 1556, it was the island's third Spanish settlement, after Caparra [ dat later in San Juan is omgedoopt ], and San German. Het is genoemd naar Taíno Cacique Xamaica Arasibo, who ruled the Taino yucayeke [ stad ], then named Abacoa. Arecibo was officially founded as a city by the Spanish crown in 1616, under the governorship of Captain Felipe de Beaumont y Navarra, when the King of Spain granted the land [ and the Tainos living there ] to Lope Conchillos.
It is known for the nearby world-famous Arecibo Observatory, which boasts the largest single telescope ever constructed.

Guánica staat ook bekend als 'El Pueblo de las Doce Calles' [ de stad met de twaalf straten ]. Guánica werd in 1508 gesticht. De naam komt uit het Taino indiaans en betekent 'hier is een plaats met water'.
Guánica is de plek waar volgens de meeste historici Christopher Columbus tijdens zijn tweede ries naar de Nieuwe Wereld in 1493 aan land ging, en later in 1898 de plaats vaar Generaal Miles en de VS-troepen aan land gingen om Puerto Rico tijdens de Spaans-Amerikaanse oorlog van Spanje af te pakken.
