Geschiedenis van Libanon

Onafhankelijk op 22 november 1943.

Libanon was sinds de eerste wereldoorlog een mandaatgebied van Frankrijk. En daarvoor was het sinds 1516 een deel van het Osmaanse Rijk.. In 1920 creëerde Frankrijk Libanon, dat een uitbreiding was van het leefgebied van de maronieten ront Mount Lebanon, de belangrijkste bergkam van het land. Omdat de maronieten graag landbouwgrond en havens wilden, werden sunnitische en shi'itische gebieden aan Libanon toegevoegd. Hier ligt de kiem voor de Libanese burgeroorlog die in 1975 begon en waar allerhande buitenlandse mogenheden zich mee bemoeiden en nog steeds bemoeien. In 1989 kwam Libanon onder arabische druk van buitenaf weer in een rustiger vaarwater.

Fenicië bestreek het huidige gebied van Libanon. De belangrijkste steden waren eerst Baälbek en Sidon en later Tyrus.
Tussen 1500 en 400 voor Christus waren de Feniciërs de belangrijkste zeevaarders en handelaars van de Middellandse Zee.

Muziek, Cultuur & Entertainment

Libanon bestaat uit diverse religieuze groepen. De hoofdscheiding is die tussen moslims en christenen.
De christenen wonen vooral in het westen van het land, waar ook de hoofdstad Beiroet is gelegen. Zij zijn onderverdeeld in Maronieten, Grieks-Orthodoxen en Armeens-Orthodoxen.

De islamiten zijn onderverdeeld in Soennieten, Sjiieten, Druzen, Isma'iliten en Alawieten.
De sjiieten wonen vooral in Zuid- en Oost-Libanon.
