Geschiedenis van Alaska

Het gebied dat nu de staat Alaska vormt, werd zo'n 12.000 jaar geleden voor het eerst gekoloniseerd door volkeren als de Inuit en diverse Indianenstammen. Zij bereikten het via de toen drooggevallen Beringstraat. De meesten trokken uiteindelijk verder Noord- en Zuid-Amerika in.
De eerste Europeanen die het gebied verkenden, kwamen uit Rusland.

  Iditarod Sledehondenrace 
De Iditarod is een jaarlijks terugkeerde sledehondenrace in de Alaska (VS). Het staat bekend als "The last great race". De start is altijd in het eerste weekend van maart. De race gaat van Anchorage naar Nome en is ruim 100 mijl (1600 km) lang. Niet alleen is de lengte een uitdaging, ook de kou (wind chill van -75 C is niet vreemd) en het weer (sneeuwstormen, te veel sneeuw, te weinig sneeuw, etc) of slechte condities van de trail (rivieren waar het ijs weg is, zeeijs dat afbreekt) kunnen het knap lastig maken.
